Numbers, patterns and systems — data literacy for the 21st century
Every reading this device produces is a piece of data. But data without understanding is just noise. This module develops the skills to read, analyse, visualise and communicate with data — and explores the technology behind the device itself, from sensors to databases to the web. These are skills for every discipline, not just science.
शिक्षकका लागि
The data literacy activities in this module are best approached as cross-curricular — the mathematics teacher, the ICT teacher and the English teacher all have stakes in these skills. The dashboard is the primary tool: encourage students to interact with it directly, change time ranges on charts, and form hypotheses before reading answers. The "How Does This System Work?" activity is excellent for students interested in engineering or computing — but frame the technical explanation as a story (a number's journey from the real world to your screen) rather than a list of components. The undergraduate research activity should be genuinely rigorous — if students produce something publishable, encourage them to submit it.
